How To Move Your Site Off SBI
Moving your site off from SBI is easy once you have the right steps and know ahead of time what you need to be prepared for.
| What You Need To Replace Having an SBI website.... 1. Need an HTML editor and a template (either purchased or
created) |
HOW TO GET IT DONE
There are 2 stages to the process. First, you
need to change the DNS so that the domain name
points to your new hosting server. PART 1 below
covers this.
Then, you will need to get complete control of
your domain name. PART 2 below covers this.
BUT FIRST, be sure that you have purchased hosting somewhere else and you have uploaded your pages to your new hosting account.
PART 1
Step 1. First, you need to get the
username and password for your domain. This is
not the same as the username and password that
you use to log into SiteCentral.
3 Ways to find this:
1. In an email specific to your domain
registration that you received when you first
purchased your SBI site.
2. In an email regarding the setup of your Mail
in your sbi site.
|
3. Contact SBI support who will provide you
with this information.
Step 2. Go to
http://build.sitesell.com/manage.html
and log in with username and password from Step
1. above.
Step 3. Find the link in the top horizontal menu called, Name Servers.

Delete the info in the Primary and Secondary
boxes, and replace with the nameservers at your
new hosting account.
NOTE: Primary and secondary must be different.
Usually primary is ns1 and secondary is ns2.
Your host may use different numbers such as ns13
and ns14 but the concept is the same.
When done, click save configuration.
PART 2
Step 1. Contact SBI support at http://support.sitesell.com/contact-support.html and ask them to UNLOCK your domain name.
Step 2. Go to a registrar (I recommend GoDaddy.com) and buy a domain transfer for the exact same domain that your SBI site was hosted on.
Step 3. Then, when purchased, immediately change your Name Server a.ka. DNS on your Godaddy account to the DNS that your hosting company provided you with.
Use videos at http://www.demodemo.com/tutorials_dns.html according to whom is your domain registrar.
Step 4. After your GoDaddy request for transfer, you will get an email from GoDaddy with a transaction Transaction ID and Security Code.
Note: If you entered an email address that has a spam blocker or requires whitelisting, then you should whitelist to ensure that you receive all communication from both Godaddy and the SBI domain registar. If you miss these emails, you transfer will fail.
Step 5. Log back into your
GoDaddy account and in the Your
Account link at the top menu, right click to see
the options. There you will find "Pending
Transfers".
Click on Pending Transfers and in the window to
the right, find the domain transfer you
purchased. Check the box to the left of the
domain name and click on the button in the far
upper right that says, Authorization.
Now the screen in the box has a place for your to enter the Transaction ID and Security Code.
Step 6. At this point, you will then need an Authorization code FROM the SBI registrar holding your domain.
You should have received an email from SBI
support with this information.
Here it is again:
| To obtain the Authorization Code
for your domain... 1) Go to... http://manage.opensrs.net/ (opens to a new window). 2) Enter your domain management login information. (i.e. Same as from Part 1 of this tutorial above.) 3) Once logged into your account, click the "Domain Extras" link near the top of the screen. 4) If a code is already displayed in the Domain Auth Code field, you may use that code as the Auth Code. Otherwise, you may make up your own Auth Code and click the "Save Configuration" button. |
Step 7. Now, log back into your GoDaddy account and go, once again, to Pending Transfers.
Check the check box to the left of the
domain. You will see that the upper menu is now
highlighted.
Click on Accept Transfer.
Enter the Authorization code provided into the
box and click Next.
Step 7. The status of your domain transfer is now, Pending Current Registrar Approval at GoDaddy.com. You should now wait 1 -2 days for an email as follows:
Step 8. Watch for an email from OpenSRS Transfer with the Subject line: "Transfer Away request has been received for the domain youSBIdomain .com." This actually comes from SBI and has a link in it. The email says that you can approve the transfer immediately by visiting the link and clicking the approve button. If you don't approve right away, the transfer will still go through but take a few more days.
Step 9. Now, wait a few more days to see
if the transfer goes through smoothly.
To check a transfer, go to
http://www.betterwhois.com/ and enter your
domain name (no "www." at the beginning).
Scroll to find where it says, Registrar or
Registrar of Record.
If it says, TUCOWS then it is still registered
with SBI's registrar.
If it says, Godaddy, then the domain transfer
has gone through (or you can log into your
Godaddy account and check the status of Pending
Transfers.).
NOTE: Keep your domain registration
information UP TO DATE. Your domain IS your
business...not your website. If you lose the
domain name, you have lost your online presence!
Always know where your domains are registered
and the IMPORTANT login information to access
them at all times! Keep your domains on
automatic renewel with funds or a cc on file
with your registrar.
Good luck,
Honor
